The problem
Aerial 360 normally means stitching two flights together, or accepting a blind spot where the aircraft is.
The approach
Design the airframe around the camera — spherical capture above and below, so one flight yields one seamless sphere.
What was built
Custom-built spherical-capture drone with a 3-axis gimbal, whole-airframe vibration damping and 7lb payload. A Panogs × ATI joint venture.
The outcome
Commercialised as vrdrone.io. Gavin served as Director of Photography.
VR Drones LLC — a joint venture between Panogs and Aerial Technology International (ATI), based
in Portland — built a purpose-designed drone carrying spherical camera systems above and below
the airframe, capturing a single seamless sphere in one flight. The system uses a 3-axis gimbal
and whole-airframe vibration damping to hit a 7-pound payload capacity, and is marketed at
vrdrone.io.
Note on phrasing: always describe this as a “custom-built spherical-capture drone.” No patent exists in Gavin’s, Panogs’, or ATI’s name for this system — never use “patented” anywhere this project is described.
