Nine UHS-I cards read at roughly 95 MB/s each — about 855 MB/s total. Any modern Thunderbolt connection carries several times that. People buy the wrong kit because they optimise for the constraint that isn't binding.
You need nine independent reader channels. Most hubs don't have them, and most multi-slot readers only pretend to.
Nine readers exceeds a laptop's USB power budget. Brownouts unmount drives mid-copy and leave truncated files that look complete.
A nine-card dump runs 22–45 minutes flat out. Consumer readers aren't built for that duty cycle and throttle when stacked.
A Thunderbolt dock's 40 Gbps does not reach its USB ports — those usually share one 10 Gbps controller between them.

Reading 855 MB/s while writing to three destinations is ~3.4 GB/s during the copy phase, and up to ~6.8 GB/s with source and destination verification running concurrently. Thunderbolt 4 saturates at the copy phase alone. Thunderbolt 5 moves true three-destination simultaneous ingest from "impossible" to "comfortable."
Topology rule: 80 Gbps is per controller, not per machine. Put the reader stack and the destination drives on separate ports — ideally separate docks. That single decision matters more than any individual product on this page.
An Anker 10-port USB 3.0 hub with nine Anker AR200 readers. Insta360's own manual endorses it. It is 5 Gbps shared across all nine readers — about 45–50 MB/s per card, roughly half what the cards can do. A nine-card 128 GB dump takes ~45 minutes instead of ~22.
It gets one thing right: it's mains-powered, which is why it works at all. Note that batching (5 cards then 4) does not help on this hub — the bottleneck is the shared 5 Gbps link, so total wall-clock is identical. The fix is replacing the hub, not changing the workflow.
The maximum on one cable is 12 slots (Lexar's six-bay dock with dual-SD modules) or 8 (Blackjet, or four dual readers). The approach that works is a docking station with swappable reader bays — one Thunderbolt cable, one power supply, active cooling built in.

ProGrade's readers stack together magnetically and look like a gang. They are not electrically connected. Each one still needs its own cable and its own host port — five readers means five ports occupied. There is no ProGrade dock that aggregates them; the PG20 and PG25 hold two readers physically while both still cable in separately. ProGrade also warns against placing the magnetic readers near storage devices, and stacking them traps heat.

Yes, with either build. Expect ~75–90 MB/s per card rather than the theoretical 95, because nine devices sharing a 10 Gbps controller eats the margin. A nine-card 128 GB dump lands around 22–28 minutes; 256 GB cards, 45–55 minutes.
Two-batch working (5 then 4) is not necessary with the right hardware — and doesn't help at all with the wrong hardware.
Every portable SSD advertises a peak speed measured against a small fast cache. Once that cache fills — typically after a few hundred gigabytes — the drive drops to its real rate. You are writing 650 GB per hour. The cache is irrelevant to you.

From May 2023, SanDisk Extreme Pro and Extreme Portable SSDs (4 TB first, then 2 TB and 3 TB) suffered widespread sudden data loss. Data-recovery firm Attingo concluded the cause washardware, not firmware — components too large for the circuit board producing weak, bubble-prone solder joints. Later revisions added epoxy and failures continued. Western Digital committed to a firmware fix for 4 TB models only, denied a hardware flaw, and a class action followed.
Whoever was right, the failure mode — silent, sudden, total — is precisely what a DIT cannot tolerate. This does not implicate SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE hard disks, which are a different product lineage (formerly G-Technology).
Speed only, zero fault tolerance. Doubling the drive count doubles failure probability. Acceptable for temporary transfers and nothing else.
Survives one drive, halves capacity, rebuilds fast. Simple and safe for a small cart drive.
The standard 4-bay cart choice. Survives one drive. Use it on NVMe, not spinning disks — an HDD RAID 5 can't feed your ingest rate.
Survives two drives. Worth the capacity cost where rebuild times are long enough that a second failure mid-rebuild is genuinely likely.
Carrying enough media for two full shooting days without formattingis what makes every safety rule possible. Without spares, someone eventually clears a card under time pressure — and that is precisely when footage is lost. More cards beats better drives.

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I cards are marketed at 170 MB/s. That figure is only reachable in SanDisk's own proprietary SDDR-C531 reader. Independent testing measures~99 MB/s in every standard third-party reader.
Budget 95–100 MB/s per card for all offload planning. Buying UHS-II cards or UHS-II readers will not change this — a UHS-II reader reads a UHS-I V30 card at ~95 MB/s, no faster. Don't pay the UHS-II premium expecting a speedup on Titan or Pro 2 media.

At mid-tier budget the maths isn't close: a Silverstack XT subscription costs 3.6× the OffShoot Pro licence every single year. Silverstack earns its price on a nine-card rig through per-drive concurrency control — a genuinely unique capability — but if you don't need that, buy perpetual.
An archive is storage you can still read in ten years and prove hasn't decayed. Hard disks have a published unrecoverable error rate around one bit per 125 TB read — at 100 TB a year, you will meet that arithmetically, not hypothetically.
Unrecoverable bit error rate — roughly 10,000× better than hard disk. Rated ~30 years, 300 full-file passes, 20,000 load cycles.
Fails slightly less often than HDD in datacenter data — but fails worse. Controller failure is instant and total; the NAND may be fine and unreachable.
About one unrecoverable bit per 125 TB read. Bit rot is silent: the file opens, the size is right, only a checksum reveals it.

Every prior LTO generation read at least one generation back. LTO-10 is the first that does not. Combine that with media costing 73% more per terabyte and, for a shop your size in 2026, LTO-9 is the clear answer. LTO-10's one genuine advantage: no cartridge pre-optimisation, where LTO-9 needs a roughly two-hour one-time initialisation per tape before first use.
Whichever you choose, budget for a migration every two or three generations. Tape is only "archive" if you plan to move it forward.

Each of these looks like a sensible purchase and isn't. Most of them fail in ways you won't notice until the day it matters.
Almost all share one controller and mount cards one at a time, not simultaneously. They look like the perfect solution and multiply your offload time roughly ninefold. The specification must explicitly state slots operate simultaneously. Confirmed simultaneous: Lexar Workflow modules, Blackjet DX-2SD, OWC Atlas Dual SD, Kingston WFS-SD, ProGrade PG08.
Hardware design fault, silent total data loss, class action. Excluded from the approved list. Their G-DRIVE hard disks are a separate lineage and fine.
The Crucial X10 is the textbook case: 2,000 MB/s for six minutes, then 200–300. On a 650 GB/hour camera you fall off that cliff inside the first hour.
Insta360 states V30 as a hard minimum and warns that non-V30 cards "are not suitable for simultaneous multi-channel file writing." Some bundled Titan kits ship V10 cards.
The slot can't read the extra contacts and files can corrupt. Also nothing above 1 TB.
No ASC MHL. It cannot meet the delivery specs most productions of any size will hand you.
None do verified card offload with reporting. CCC is excellent for cloning shuttle drives to each other — a genuinely different job.
Satisfies "three copies" and fails "two different media types." A shared design fault or firmware bug can take all three at once. The third leg must be a different class of storage.

1. More memory cards. Enough for two full shooting days without formatting is what makes every other rule possible. This beats every other upgrade on this page.
2. A second OWC Envoy Ultra ($1,199) to replace a Samsung T9 as a live destination — removing the uncomfortably thin 5% speed margin.
3. The UPS ($400), if you somehow skipped it. It's the cheapest protection against the one failure mode three copies doesn't cover.
